What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is an easily preventable bacterial infection of the gums. Poor oral hygiene allows accumulation of plaque and bacteria which produce toxins and enzymes that cause gum irritation. This results in inflammation, bleeding and gum recession. Bacteria and inflammation eventually compromise the tooth’s attachment to it’s surrounding gum and bone. In severe cases periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss.
If you are concerned you might have periodontal disease, please get in touch with our friendly reception staff to book a cleaning appointment where your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your gums.
How do I know if I have periodontal disease?
Early periodontal disease can be hard to detect, making regular dental appointments and good oral hygiene especially important.
Some common signs of periodontal disease include:
- Red, swollen or tender gyms
- Gums that bleed easily
- Persistent bad breath
- Gum recession
- Gums that pull away from the teeth
- Pus between the teeth and gums
- Teeth that are increasingly mobile
- Changes in the way your teeth meet
- Changes in the fit of your denture
Some individuals may be at greater risk of periodontal disease, this can be due to medical conditions such as diabetes, some medications, environmental factors such as smoking, and even genetics. Your dentist may advise you schedule more frequent professional cleaning if they believe you are at higher risk.
What is the treatment for periodontal disease?
Periodontal cleaning involves the removal of plaque and tartar which sit underneath the gum on the root surfaces of teeth. Your dentist will likely recommend more frequent cleaning appointments. You can opt to have this cleaning done with local anaesthetic so it is comfortable. Management methods can vary depending on case severity, however with diligent cleaning and the support of our dentists many patients are able to significantly reduce the severity of their periodontal disease. Your dentist may also prescribe special mouthwash or site-specific subgingival antibiotics which both aim to reduce bacteria in the mouth.
