Why is it important to seek emergency help?

If dental trauma causes a tooth to loosen or be displaced, the tooth may be at risk of dying and therefore seeking urgent dental treatment is critical, ideally within 1-2 hours.

Dental emergencies can be extremely painful, and seeking the help of an experienced dentist is the best way to alleviate pain.

Seeking early help is likely to also save you money, as dental problems progress they become more complicated and expensive to solve.

What to do in the event of dental trauma?

Give the individual an ice pack to reduce swelling, and anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen, acetaminophen and naproxen). Avoid the use of aspirin as this will interfere with the clotting process.

When dealing with complete tooth displacement, pick up the tooth by the crown only, it is important to avoid touching the root of the tooth. In some cases the tooth may need to be cleaned, the best solution for this is cows milk. The use of water should be avoided. Allow the tooth to sit in a cup of cows milk and seek your nearest emergency dental service.

Unless you believe the person has sustained any head, facial or neck traumas that require medical attention, you will save time and money seeking help from an emergency dental service rather than attending ER. They may be able to prescribe stronger pain medication, however will typically refer on to a dental service anyway, as they are not equipped to deal with dental emergencies.
