Why do I need a crown?
Crowns are used to repair teeth that are at risk of cracking, or breaking. Often when a tooth has had multiple restorations, and / or little natural tooth structure remains, a filling may not be sufficient to prevent further damage. A crown, which is fabricated in far stronger material, and encases the whole tooth is a more viable long term solution. Crowns may also be placed for cosmetic purposes to resolve discolouration on visible teeth.
What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is essentially multiple crowns joined together in order to replace a missing tooth. Typically a bridge is made of three crowns, whereby the central tooth is essentially floating, and the two crowns either side are fixed to permanent teeth. Dental bridges can be a great tooth replacement option, however they are not suitable for everyone. Your dentist will be able to discuss this with you.
What is the process of getting a dental crown or bridge?
Dental crowns or bridge generally require two appointments. During the first appointment your dentist will shape the remaining tooth structure, and take impression moulds of the tooth. The dentist will then fabricate and fit your temporary crown to protect the underlying tooth while your crown is made externally at a dental laboratory. The second appointment involves the removal of the temporary crown, cleaning of the tooth surface and cementation of the permanent crown.
What are dental crowns and bridges made of?
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials which have different advantages. At Carey’s Dental Arts we offer tooth coloured porcelain and ceramic crowns as well as gold and metal alloy. Your dentist will be able to guide you towards the options best for you.
