What is a dental filling?
Fillings repair teeth that have been damaged due to decay or trauma. The techniques used depend on the size and location of the filling. This procedure is commonly conducted under local anaesthetic as the dentist will need to remove damaged tooth structure, to ensure the filling has a clean bonding surface. A tooth coloured, BPA free, composite resin is then used to build the tooth back up restoring its structure and function.
What is the difference between a filling and a sealant?
Sealants differ from fillings in that they are placed on healthy teeth. Molar teeth can have deep groves that are very difficult to clean. By placing a small tooth coloured sealant over these groves the risk of future decay is significantly reduced. Unlike fillings, placement of a sealant does not require local aesthetic or any permanent tooth structure removal.
Why do I / my kids need sealants?
If advised by you dentist, sealants are a great investment as they are far less invasive and expensive than a filling. Sealants are a widely performed preventative measure for kids, especially where teeth cleaning compliance is an issue.
