Professional whitening vs take home whitening?
Professional whitening is done in the dental chair, and takes approximately 1 – 1.5 hours. The whitening gel used by the dentist is much stronger and therefore requires much less time to improve tooth colour than take home gels, which are applied nightly to the teeth over the course of 2-3 weeks.
Whilst professional whitening is a convenient solution, the stronger professional gels may worsen pre-existing sensitivity. In some cases the take home whitening is a better option. Your dentist will make custom trays of your teeth, and you can then achieve the same result with a lower strength bleach and a bit of extra time. The advantage of this method is that you can reuse your trays if you decide you want to whiten your teeth again in the future.
Things to consider before whitening:
- Your teeth should be professionally cleaned prior to whitening.
- Fillings don’t respond to whitening gels. If you have fillings on visible teeth, you may want to consider getting these changed following whitening.
- Whitening can not be carried out if you have any unresolved decay.
