What is a tooth extraction?
A tooth extraction involves the removal of a tooth from it’s socket within the jaw bone. Extraction of a tooth should always be a last resort after all other treatment options have been exhausted. It is always preferable to preserve your own teeth.
The loss of a tooth can have varying degrees of impact on a persons function depending on their occlusion and position of the tooth. If the loss of a tooth leaves a visible space or has a marked impact on your function, there are many tooth replacement options you can discuss with your dentist.
Reasons you may require tooth extraction:
- Infection of the tooth
- Severe gum disease (periodontal disease)
- Crowding of the teeth
- Trauma
Why do my wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Wisdom tooth removal is increasingly common. Most often, issues with wisdom teeth result from lack of space, which can lead to difficulty with cleaning, decay, and infection.
The complexity of wisdom tooth removal is case specific. The dentists at Carey Smiles Arts can offer in chair removal with a variety of sedation techniques. However more difficult cases may require referral to an oral surgeon.
Are extractions painful?
Contrary to common beliefs, extraction of a tooth should not be painful. In most cases local anaesthetic sufficiently alleviates pain. However if you are particularly anxious, or require multiple extractions your dentist may recommend IV sedation. At Cary’s Dental Arts it is our priority to ensure your dental experience is as comfortable as possible.
